Microsoft's family of mixed reality devices launch October 17

"With the AltspaceVR team aboard we look forward to building the world's preeminent mixed reality community", says Alex Kipman, Microsoft's inventor of HoloLens. AltSpace is now officially a part of Microsoft and helps provide all sorts of content ranging from virtual reality meetups to comedy shows and more, Microsoft said. The Olympics are a good demonstration of the appeal of virtual reality video, with the ability to see a 360-degree view of sports.

Microsoft is taking the fight to Facebook's Oculus Rift and HTC's VIVE virtual reality headsets by dropping the virtual reality and augmented reality monikers. Microsoft lists which computers are supported on a support page, which is now offline.

Microsoft made this announcement at a small press event in San Francisco today. Finally, the company unveiled two new programs to get the tech in the hands of consumers: a Windows Mixed Reality SteamVR preview for developers, and a new mixed reality experience created in the Halo universe to give consumers a chance to test out the devices in Microsoft Stores with a beloved gaming property.

According to Alanna Cotton, VP and General Manager of Samsung Electronics America, the headset will have dual AMOLED displays, built-in spatial AKG headphones, inside-out tracking, a built-in microphone, and motion controllers with a 110-degree field of view.

These features make the headset more in line with the Oculus Rift, rather than a budget headset.

But the $3,000 device, much costlier than mainstream VR headsets that sell for less than $1,000, has been limited to niche applications.
