GM Commits to All-Electric Future

The company plans to offer a fuel cell vehicle to retail customers within five years, it said.

The event was billed as a "sneak peek" into GM's electric future.

GM also indicated that it thinks the future will not only include battery-electric technology but hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles, as well.

Mark Reuss, the company's chief of global product development, said Monday that GM would introduce two new all-electric vehicles derived from its current battery-powered Chevrolet Bolt sedan.

GM has previously announced plans to make some of its future electric vehicles capable of driving themselves in robot taxi fleets.

"Tata Motors won the tender and will now supply the electric vehicles in two phases", Energy Efficiency Services Ltd, an arm of the ministry of power, said in a statement on Friday.

Last week was a big week for the electric vehicle - as new players entered the game and China moved to start phasing out gasoline-powered autos.

It's no surprise that GM, which became the first automaker to begin mass-producing an affordable long-range electric vehicle a year ago, appears to have an extensive electric-vehicle product-development program well underway.

India's Tata Motors has won a bid to manufacture thousands of electric cars for the government as part of a push to promote battery-powered vehicles as the nation grapples with soaring pollution levels.

GM shares closed on Monday at $42.15, the highest level since the company's 2010 post-bankruptcy initial public offering.

That possibility appeared to move closer on Monday, when General Motors' chairman and CEO Mary Barra announced that her firm - the maker of the Hummer, the Corvette and the Suburban - "believes in an all-electric future".

Reuss said that GM would follow the Bolt, which went on sale late previous year, with two additional all-electric vehicles by 2018. The cars, priced at almost $15,500, are the first attempt by the Indian government to replace its half-a-million fleet of diesel and petrol cars - used by hhigh-rankinggovernment employees - with electric vehicles. Engineers and designers will build on GM's electric lineup from there, the automaker said.

"We see an inflection point in the major markets toward battery electric vehicles", Marakby said.

Charles Freese, GM executive director of global fuel cell business, said SURUS is designed for a "wide range of applications", including freight and emergency rescue vehicles such as ambulances and military vehicles for disaster relief efforts.
