Russell Westbrook signs 5-year, $205M extension

Westbrook simultaneously shook up the National Basketball Association and solidified the Thunder by signing a five-year, $205 million extension to stay in Oklahoma City.

The person spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because the team had not disclosed the deal.

Even though Westbrook signed a three-year, $85 million extension just last summer, he met the qualifications for the super-max contract due to a designated player veteran extension allowed by the new National Basketball Association collective bargaining agreement. A year after Kevin Durant ditched Westbrook and the Thunder to play in Golden State, Presti managed to trade for Paul George and Carmelo Anthony.

Russell Westbrook signed the biggest contract in National Basketball Association history on Friday, which just so happened to be former teammate Kevin Durant's birthday.

Oklahoma City Thunder star Paul George had no inside information. Both George and Anthony can become free agents after this season. For Westbrook, its the biggest guaranteed contract in National Basketball Association history - six seasons and $233 million through 2022-23.

The Thunder acquired Westbrook, a UCLA standout, with the No. 4 overall pick at the 2018 NBA Draft. A superstar decided, on his own, to remain in Oklahoma City for the foreseeable future.

Though it took Westbrook three months to make an extension official, those inside the Thunder never quite lost optimism he would stay with the franchise for the longterm. Now, with Westbrook locked up, the Thunder's long-term outlook is in a much more stable position.

By Mayor Mick Cornett's official proclamation: From this day forward, Every Day is Russell Westbrook Day.

Westbrook, who broke the National Basketball Association record for the most triple-doubles in a season with 42 in 2016-17, had been entering the second season of a three-year, $85.6m deal that is set to pay him $28.5m this season. The cap increased 5.25 percent this season and is projected by the National Basketball Association to increase less than 2 percent in 2018-19. Westbrook was not giving any indication about which direction he was leaning in regards to the contract extension. James will try to continue the Cavaliers' domination in the Eastern Conference together with fellow All-Star Dwyane Wade, who signed a one-year deal worth $2.3 million after getting his buyout from the Chicago Bulls.
