Hurricane Maria could cause unsafe currents along United States coast

We will certainly be watching the Outer Banks of North Carolina closely by the middle of the week as Hurricane Maria could get very close to them.

As the storm slowly moves away from the Bahamas into the Atlantic, forecasters say southeastern U.S. beaches will likely see "dangerous surf and rip currents" over the next several days. Those on the Carolina and mid-Atlantic coasts are warned to monitor the storm's progress.

Swells generated by Maria are increasing along portions of the southeastern United States coast and will be increasing along the Mid-Atlantic coast Sunday.

As of early Sunday morning, the storm's maximum sustained winds were still at 115 miles an hour, making it a still risky Category 3 hurricane.

Maria was the thirteenth storm to develop this Atlantic hurricane season, which is above the average number of storms typically seen, which is 12.

Maximum wind gusts from 39mph up to 95mph arriving in Britain can be seen on a dramatic map showing Maria's forecast track towards the UK.

While the onslaught of devastating hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria came right on cue with the typical peak of hurricane season (September 10), the lack of new development is also following climatology.

So in conclusion, a track just offshore is most likely but we can't feel too comfortable about it for a couple more days.

Hurricane Maria is moving away from the Bahamas on Saturday. A storm surge watch has also been issued for the North Carolina coast.

Check back for updates in the days ahead as forecast guidance comes into better agreement on the overall long-term steering for Maria. One, is a weakness in the blocking ridge east of us due to Jose and the second is a digging trough coming in from the west that will kick Maria out to sea. However, Lee will remain no threat to land and stay far out over the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean this week, and is never expected to be a bother to anyone.

"As features work into the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico in early October, wind shear is typically low and waters are at their warmest", Kottlowski said.

Officials say direct impacts from the storm includes tropicsl storm force winds and storm surge of 2-4 feet along the Outer Banks.

Be aware the rip current risk remains high from the swells from Hurricane Maria through the first half of the week.
