Ryabkov said that US claims of being in Syria principally to battle the jihadist group were not equal to its actions on the ground, in what he called a "two-faced" Syria policy.

A senior Russian official has denounced what he called the "two-faced policy" of the USA, saying it was to blame for the death of a Russian general, Valery Asapov, in Syria, according to an RIA news agency report.

The Russian Defence Ministry said on Sunday the general had been killed by shelling near Deir al-Zor.

On Sept. 16, the group said six of its fighters were wounded in airstrikes by regime and Russian warplanes in the Al-Sinaaiya area around seven kilometers (4 miles) from the eastern bank of the Euphrates.

Russia warned the United States on Thursday it would target USA -backed militias in Syria if Russian troops again came under fire, as the United States disclosed an unusual face-to-face meeting between US and Russian generals meant to avoid such clashes.

Spokesman Mustafa Bali said the attack on Monday "by land and air" had wounded SDF fighters. Moscow denied the allegation that it struck the militia's forces at the Conoco gas plant.

Rapid advances by the Syrian and Russian forces are bringing nearer the time the war-torn country is brought back under control of the "legitimate government of Syria, as recognized by the United Nations", which doesn't sit well with the U.S. and part of the Kurdish forces, that strive for an independent state of their own in Syria and Iraq.

The ministry said Lieutenant-General Valeryi Asapov died at a command station manned by Syrian troops, assisting commanders in the liberation of the city.

Syria's largest oil field, the al-Omar, is located on the eastern side of the river.

Previously, the U.S-led coalition had downed Iranian drones in the area, considering them hostile because they dropped ammunition near a base where USA troops operated alongside allied Syrian opposition fighters.

The group has taken over 90 percent of the Raqqa province, the de facto capital of IS in northern Syria. SDF commander Ahmed Abu Khawla told Reuters that Saturday's advance has brought his group within 2.5 miles (4km) of pro-government forces also fighting ISIS in the province.
