U.S. troops deployed to Israel get a new barracks

The base is located within the IAF's School of Aerial Defense and will house dozen of USA soldiers permanently stationed in Israel as part of a task force. The new barracks building is inside an Israeli air force base in the Negev.

The U.S. soldiers will operate the complex radar system that tracks the flight path of ballistic missiles, as well as rockets and missiles fired from Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.

He also told reporters that the new base, together with other recent upgrades to Israel's air defense system "will improve our abilities significantly", adding that "It won't get us to 100 percent, but it will get us much closer to achieving important things during war".

USA military forces are routinely based in Israel, for joint exercises, cooperation with the IDF, and to operate some U.S. facilities in the country. It demonstrates the "years-old alliance between the United States and the State of Israel".

While commenting that the base is a reflection the close military ties shared between the two nations, Haimovich refused to disclose what type of activities the USA soldiers will undertake. In March, EUCOM Commander Army Gen. Curtis M. Scaparrotti visited Israel and "toured various facilities ... to strengthen military ties between the United States and its ally", but no mention was ever made of plans for the new base. Gen. John Gronski also stressed the "strong bond" between the two countries.

Haimovich said the new battalion would enable Israel to deploy more Iron Dome systems in a more effective manner to counter regional threats on Israel's northern and southern borders.

Earlier this year, Israel intercepted another drone that strayed into the Golan airspace from neighboring Syria. For instance, it wouldn't be unprecedented for the USA to simply rent out real estate to install a military base: Camp Lemmonier in Djibouti sits on leased land.

"The United States and Israel have long planned together, exercised together and trained together", Gronski said. "And now, with the opening of this site, these crucial interactions will happen every day", he said.

In April, Israel unveiled David's Sling, which was jointly developed with the US and targets medium-range threats.
