Phillies pitcher somehow catches a comebacker in his jersey

Clayton Kershaw saw two things come to an end Monday with one swing of the bat. It was the first grand slam Kershaw has ever allowed in his 10-year career.

Not only did Los Angeles Dodgers leadoff hitter Chris Taylor's hit to lead off the game have plenty of loft on it, but it hit a barrier on the left-center field wall at Citizens Bank Park that sent the ball rolling toward the left-field line. It was the longest scoreless streak by any pitcher against the Phillies since the Mets' Tom Seaver blanked them for 38 consecutive innings from 1969-70.

The grand slam was just the latest in a string of home run firsts for the pitcher who still leads the majors in ERA (2.26).

The offensive outburst turned a loss into a win for Pivetta, who allowed just the two first-inning runs in six innings. I just wanted to make sure I got the head out.

Even with a five-week stay on the DL, Kershaw has given up 21 home runs this season, a career-high by five.

What's more, five players in the Phillies' lineup had never faced Kershaw, and usually the advantage goes to the pitcher in those situations.

Philadelphia Phillies' Aaron Altherr hits a grand slam off Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw during the sixth inning of a baseball game, Monday, Sept. 18, 2017, in Philadelphia.

"Obviously we were being careful with Hoskins", said catcher Austin Barnes of the walk to Rhys Hoskins that loaded the bases. I blew it and we lost. Aaron Altherr accounted for all the Philadelphia offense with a grand slam off Kershaw. Freddy Galvis was 2-for-4 with a run.

Kershaw is 17-4 with a 2.26 ERA, a 0.93 WHIP and 194 strikeouts in 163 innings this season, so the term "struggling" is all relative.

"I really don't have an answer for that".

Kershaw spent some time on the disabled list recently and since his return, his numbers haven't been great.

The Dodgers Magic Number remains at four, but could be lowered if the Arizona Diamondbacks lose to the San Diego Padres later in the evening. And he's at four, so I definitely know he's trending in the right way.

"You want to play in the big leagues, let's play in the big leagues", the second-year manager said.

The Dodgers had three home runs themselves but it wasn't enough to counteract Altherr's one sweet shot.
