Williams Faces Kvitova in Quarters; Sharapova's US Open Ends

Petra Kvitova powered past Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza in Sunday's US Open night session to reach the quarter-finals.

Kvitova, whose first event this year was the French Open, has a new appreciation for her chances at Grand Slam glory.

Muguruza remains ahead in a three-woman fight for world number one after the US Open but can be overtaken by Czech current number one Karolina Pliskova if she makes the final or Ukraine fourth seed Elina Svitolina if she reaches the semi-finals.

Sharapova tried a bit of everything, even resorting to switching over her racket to hit a few lefty shots. Then she lost in the second round at the All England Club, where she was a 4-1 favorite, and has seen the quarterfinal round only once since, at Stanford.

"I think Billie Jean King put it best: "Pressure is privilege". Kvitova is 4-1 over her career against Williams, but they haven't played since 2014. "I didn't know how the journey would end".

But in NY, a loss would mean a much longer lens to view her next Slam opportunity, the Aussie Open, which is five months away.

"Sometimes I just really feel that the touch is there - the strength, the aggressive kind of game plan", she was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

Kanepi is no stranger to the latter stages of grand slams but has plummeted down the rankings because of injury and illness and needed to use her protected ranking just to enter qualifying. Kvitova beat the sensational Spaniard-recent victor of Wimbledon and Cincinnati-in two sets, 7-6 (3), 6-3.

Kvitova - who showed no signs of the severe hand injury she suffered during a horrific home invasion in December - will face Venus Williams in her second last-eight appearance in NY after the ninth seed prevailed against Carla Suarez Navarro. But the mere fact that Petra Kvitova and Venus Williams are playing in a U.S. Open quarterfinal in 2017 is more than enough cause for celebration.

"Given all she's been gone through, playing at this level is remarkable", Muguruza said afterwards.

Both players have overcome their own adversity to be in the position they are in, but neither player will be thinking about that when they meet for a spot in the U.S. Open semifinals on Tuesday.

From that moment on, the Czech was in command, moving 5-3 clear after Muguruza steered a volley long and converting her first set point with a smash.

Earlier Sunday, 18-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov's entertaining stay ended with a 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3) loss to 12th-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain. "Pretty good performance from her", she conceded. The former Wimbledon champion beat Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to seal berth in last eight.
