PM Modi to visit China's Xiamen to attend 9th BRICS summit

China on Saturday made it clear that it would object to any discussion about Pakistan's alleged role in sheltering terrorists during the upcoming BRICS summit which will also be attended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"We had raised it (terrorism) in Goa summit and sure it will revisit us in this summit as well", said Preeti Saran, secretary (east), MEA on Sunday, hours before the PM was scheduled to fly out to Xiamen in China where the annual Brics meet is being held this year. "We are looking at the summit very positively, so as to come out with a strong outcome, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is looking forward to participate in this summit", Saran said.

"We will also interact with the BRICS Business Council represented by captains of industry from all five countries", he had said.

Brics leaders will also engage in a dialogue with other emerging markets and developing countries, including Egypt, Guinea, Mexico, Tajikistan and Thailand.

He is set to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the three-day event.

"India attaches high importance to BRICS, which has begun a 2nd decade of its partnership for progress and peace", he tweeted.

Xi will host a meeting of BRICS leaders, discussing the world economy, global governance, worldwide and regional hotspot issues and national security and development, he said.

Modi said during the visit, the two sides will review developments in bilateral relations, especially the extensive programme of development cooperation and socio-economic assistance that India is undertaking in Myanmar.

Issues of mutual concern such as worldwide conflicts, the fight against terrorism, and reform of the global system of governance, notably the democratisation of the United Nations and the Bretton Woods Institutions will also be discussed. New areas to work together will also be explored.

Though China has said that terrorism will not be on the agenda, however, going by past precedence, PM Modi may bring up the issue. Later, the prime minister will visit Myanmar to boost bilateral ties from 5th to 7th September.

Modi understood China's vulnerability and sensitivity as the host and kept his participation in the Xiamen summit in abeyance until the Doklam deal was hashed out.

The Prime Minister will head to Myanmar on a State visit.
