Brexit-wary Japan executives to talk with United Kingdom trade chief

Mr Abe told reporters the Prime Minister had been forceful in her reassurance about the Brexit process - a sign of Mrs May's upbeat, confident approach, according to the source. I'm here for the long term.

Asked if she wanted to fight the next election for the Conservatives, Mrs May said: "Yes".

"And it's crucial. What me and my government are about is not just delivering on Brexit".

"It is my intention not just to deliver a good Brexit deal for the United Kingdom but also to ensure that "global Britain" can take its place in the world, trading around the world and that we deal with those injustices domestically that we need to do to ensure that stronger, more global but also fairer Britain for the future".

"I'm in this for the long term", she added.

Critics back home have accused the PM of pursuing a "cut and paste" Brexit after saying she wanted to use the trade deal being finalised between the European Union and Japan as the starting point for a future agreement with Britain.

May's authority has been badly damaged by a ill-judged election campaign earlier this year which cost her Conservative party its majority in parliament and failed to provide a clear mandate for her Brexit strategy.

The Prime Minister spent the last morning of her three-day trip with Emperor Akihito at the Imperial Palace on Friday.

Mrs May's hopes of remaining as Conservative leader have appeared doomed since her gamble on a snap election backfired.

In a huddle with journalists on the plane to Japan, Mrs May spoke about how she wants to pursue a domestic agenda with renewed vigour.

The Global Times, an offshoot of Communist party mouthpiece the People's Daily, has made an art of ribbing Conservative prime ministers.

He said: "In fact the ones who manoeuvre probably will not become the leader".
