Starting RB Jordan Scarlett suspended

Florida announced Wednesday that starting running back Jordan Scarlett is suspended ahead of the team's season opener against MI on Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET, ABC).

Receiver Rick Wells also was suspended, bringing the total to 10 Gators (including top returning receiver Antonio Calloway) who will miss the opener due to team discipline.

Freshman wide receiver James Robinson was then suspended after being cited for marijuana possession last week.

The football players in Gainesville can't seem to stay out of trouble.

Star wide receiver Antonio Callaway, reserve defensive linemen Keivonnis Davis, Jordan Smith and Richerd Desir-Jones, freshmen linebackers Ventrell Miller and James Houston and freshman offensive lineman Kadeem Telfort were suspended on August 13 for a reported misuse of school-issued funds. Of the 10, Callaway, Scarlett and backup defensive end Keivonnis Davis were the only ones who would've seen appreciable time against MI.

In all seriousness, though, being without your leading rusher AND receiver for a game against Jim Harbaugh and MI, no matter how many starters they lost from last season, is very much less than ideal. Callaway was suspended earlier this month for improper use of student ID's at the student bookstore. Miller was also charged with marijuana possession, but he was already suspended.

Desir-Jones saw playing time in two games last season on the offensive line, but switched to defensive line this season.

Florida Gators running back Jordan Scarlett (25) joined the suspension list. Miller, Houston, and Smith are freshmen, but Davis earned five starts last season.
