United Nations chief seeks 'dream' of Israel-Palestinian peace in first visit

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the Prime Minister's Office in Jerusalem, where he told his guest about the imbalance in the worldwide organization treatment of Israel.

Netanyahu and Guterres agreed that Israel and the United Nations would attempt to negotiate a compromise solution that would be in line with Israeli law.

Tehran is building sites to produce precision-guided missiles in Syria and Lebanon, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

Hezbollah militants believe that the war in Syria is an Israeli and American conspiracy to unseat enemies in the region and weaken the pro-Iranian axis.

He added that settlement activity is illegal under worldwide law, calling it an "obstacle" that needs to be removed.

Earlier in the day, the Israeli president and United Nations chief met in Jerusalem to discuss the situation in the region, specifically what was going on in Syria.

"Settlement activities represent a major obstacle in relation to implementation of the two-state solution", said Guterres in a press conference with Hamdallah.

The Palestinians have expressed impatience with the White House, which has not yet offered a plan for forging peace despite U.S. president Donald Trump's early pledges to pursue what he calls "the ultimate deal".

"I discussed with the United Nations secretary-general the latest developments regarding the political, economic and humanitarian situation in the West Bank, Jerusalem and Gaza strip", Hamdallah said.

As the USA attempts to restart peace talks, following the last talks which collapsed in 2014, the Palestinians are pushing for support from the Trump administration for the creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel which has been part and parcel of Washington's Mideast policy for the past two decades.

This is something Israel can not accept.

His spokesman later clarified that he meant to say days instead of years, referring to the USA rally.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres held talks with Israeli leaders Monday on his first visit since taking office, making a forceful argument for a two-state solution with the Palestinians and speaking of his "dream" for peace.

In his remarks, Guterres said that "the right of existence of the State of Israel is clear and the right of existence in security of the State of Israel is clear". On Wednesday, he plans to visit the Gaza Strip.

Besides Israel and the Palestinian territories, Macron said the trip will include Lebanon and Jordan.
