USA hospital worker claims $759 million jackpot

"At 3:00, with the eclipse ended, sales returned to their previous strong level", the lottery said. He said the Chicopee store will receive $50,000 for selling the winning ticket, he said. It is the second-largest USA lottery prize, ahead of a $656 million Mega Millions prize won by three people in 2012.

Bolduc's store found out that they sold the winning numbers in the $758.7 million jackpot around 8 a.m.

The winning ticket was sold at a Pride Station & Store in Chicopee in Western Massachusetts.

The lottery did not say how the error was made.

An employee at the Pride convenience store where a winning Powerball ticket for more than $750 million was sold in Chicopee, Mass., Aug. 24, 2017.

She said she had already quit her job, a clerical one that she had done for 32 years in the nursing department of Mercy Medical Centre.

The current jackpot is the second-largest Powerball prize and the third largest of all lottery jackpot games.

A winning ticket matches five numbers drawn between 1 and 69 while the "Powerball" number is drawn from 1 to 26.

Watertown is the suburb to which the Boston Marathon bombers fled.

Powerball said it was "the highest jackpot won on a single ticket and the biggest lottery prize ever awarded to one single person".

The largest single-ticket Powerball prize in United States history has been claimed by a MA hospital worker who promptly quit her job only hours after learning she had won the 758.7 million dollar (£592 million) prize.

The Associated Press reports that six other tickets won $2 million, and 34 more are worth $1 million. After someone wins the jackpot, the prize will drop to $40 million, then resume its growth.

The winning numbers are 6, 7, 16, 23 and 26, and the Powerball number is 4.

The jackpot is listed as $758.7 million, but that refers to the annuity option, doled out in 30 payments over 29 years.

Amid all the talk about sudden wealth, it's easy to forget that the objective of Powerball is to raise money for government programs in the 44 states where the game is played, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Lottery players will have a shot at a $700 million Powerball jackpot that ranks as the second largest in US history.

The January 2016 jackpot was scooped by winners who bought tickets in Tennessee, California and Florida. Some of the nation's biggest states, including California and Texas, don't assess state taxes on lottery prizes, so winners in those spots would be just a bit richer.

The jackpot victor has the option to claim their prize in 29 yearly installments, or one lump sum that would amount to around $443.3 million, minus federal and state taxes.
