Will probe Jayalalithaa's death, turn Poes Garden to memorial: TN CM

Tamil Nadu government has chose to form an inquiry commission to probe the death of former chief minister and AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa.

"The commission will be headed by retired High Court judge and he would submit his report", Palaniswami said.

Palaniswamy said Jayalalithaa had worked well with dexterity as Tamil Nadu's chief minister and brought laurels to the state.

"There are several requests from various quarters that her residence be converted into a memorial".

Stalin, the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, said the move was "an eyewash" and a plan to facilitate the merger of the two rival factions led by former chief minister O Panneerselvam and Palaniswami to continue "corruption" without any arguments or problems among them.

It was certainly not welcome for Jayalalithaa's niece Deepa, who held a press conference at her T'Nagar residence and declared she would fight the CM's decision "right up to the Supreme Court". "To enlighten the public about her caliber, her achievements and sacrifices, her house will be converted into a memorial for the public to pay their respects" the TN CM was quoted by Times Of India.

The announcements were made following representations from the public and others, and after due consideration by the government, the chief minister said.

Expulsion of VK Sasikala and her family members from the party is now the only remaining demand left to be met before the two factions can agree to merge.

He alleged that there was a quarrel at Jayalalithaa's Poes Garden home during which she was "pushed down" and collapsed.

Since Jayalalithaa's death, there have been suspicions of foul play. "After the chaos which prevailed in the party for some months immediately after the passing away of party founder MGR in 1987, the AIADMK has never seen this kind of a no-holds-barred internal war in the party", said a veteran scribe following the AIADMK for the last three decades.
