NOAA predicts more active hurricane season than inital forecast

Conditions are expected to become more favorable for tropical development as the system moves west over the Atlantic and into Caribbean.

Ms Lowe added that ex-hurricanes like Gert can cause difficulty for accurate forecasting.

This storm could be upgraded to a tropical storm by Friday morning.

"Nothing severe is expected but given this August so far, it's just a bit disappointing, since the kids have broken up, it's turned a bit more unsettled".

Ms Lowe said: "As often happens when ex-hurricanes get put into computer models, the weather does become more hard to predict day to day, but it is going to be changeable".

The National Hurricane Center on Thursday said a new tropical depression or storm could form as soon as today as it moves into the Caribbean. After that time, Gert is expected to weaken, and the cyclone is forecast to become an extratropical low by Thursday night.

Gert's maximum sustained winds have decreased to 100 miles per hour, and the hurricane is expected to weaken even more, likely to lose its tropical characteristics by Thursday night, according to the NHC.

"Like 91L, this feature also has a weak circulation...if 92L can overcome the dry air, it has a chance at becoming a depression or tropical storm this weekend".

Forecasters also were tracking a second area of low pressure about midway between the coast of Africa and the Lesser Antilles.

Bell said Gert is expected to continue on its northeast track away from the U.S. Atlantic coastline.

N.H.C. says showers and thunderstorms are showing signs of organization in association with a low pressure system located about 550 miles east of the Lesser Antilles. Next three names on the list of names are Harvey, Irma, and Jose.

Invest 92L has a 60% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone within the next 48 hours. An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter is sceduled to investigate the disturbance Thursday afternoon, forecaster Jack Beven said in the 8 a.m. tropical weather outlook.
