Amber Heard makes fun of the politician who kicked out her dogs

It emerged that a New Zealand MP asked a question to parliament about citizenship after speaking with Shadow Foreign Minister Penny Wong's chief of staff.

Prime Minister Bill English said he was informed about Mr Joyce's case late last week and according to local law, he is a New Zealand citizen.

The timeline of events that led to Australian Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce finding out he was a New Zealand citizen has been confirmed for the first time.

However, Mr Turnbull said it was "outrageous and improper" that an NZ Labour MP, Chris Hipkins, also admitted asking questions in Parliament about the citizenship issue last week after talks with someone from the Australian Labor Party.

"The idea that you're going around the backroom between research units, meddling in other countries' politics, is just plain stupid".

His case has been referred to the High Court of Australia, who will decide whether or not he must resign.

When Australian Deputy PM Barnaby Joyce was revealed to be a New Zealand dual citizen on Monday - possibly in violation of constitutional rules - social media users joked about what Amber Heard and Johnny Depp might think.

"Not since the old days of worrying about Soviet Russia, that is how long since we have had to worry about these sort of things", he told Sky News.

The government has signalled it will refer the eligibility of five opposition MPs - including Justine Keay, Susan Lamb and Tony Zappia - to the High Court.

In comparison, Aussies who choose to uproot their lives and move to New Zealand are quickly able to take part in their new country's political landscape, voting in local elections as residents and becoming eligible for various benefits such as welfare and student loans after 2-3 years of living in Aotearoa.

By Tuesday afternoon, Joyce told parliament that authorities in Wellington had agreed he could renounce the New Zealand citizenship unknowingly acquired from his Dunedin-born father. They flew the dogs back to their home in the US after top politician Barnaby Joyce, who held the post of Agriculture Minister at the time, threatened to put the dogs down if they remained in the country.

Bishop weighed into the issue when asked if she would trust Labour if it won the election next month.

However, she supports an audit of the citizenship status of all members and senators, and wants the register of MPs' interests to include a statement on citizenship status. "We have got a good relationship".

The country's Internal Affairs minister Peter Dunne said it was "utter nonsense" to suggest New Zealand's opposition party had triggered Joyce's problems.

"It's quite a serious issue for them, a one vote majority and the appearance of a New Zealand party being involved in the removing of that majority so I can understand why there was a bit of heat in it".

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is also under pressure over comments he made in parliament about the likely outcome of the High Court ruling.

Asked on Tuesday if Labor had requested that a NZ MP ask questions, Mr Burke said "absolutely not to my knowledge".
