Premier League plans to Change Transfer Deadline date

The Premier League is expected to approve changes that will see the summer transfer window end before the start of the season.

The current transfer window closes on August 31, more than two weeks after the start of the domestic league season.

Everton boss Ronald Koeman publicly advocated for moving the transfer deadline over the weekend and there is believed to be broad support for the idea, although Watford are one club known to oppose it.

Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp, Swansea's Paul Clement and West Brom's Tony Pulis are among those who have gone on record recently expressing frustration at transfer business lingering well into the new campaign, and it is understood the matter will be raised at next month's shareholders' board meeting. "If Liverpool were faced with a similar situation to the one they now have with Philippe Coutinho after the domestic window had closed, they would not be able to reinvest the transfer funds and bring in reinforcements", it says.

The current window, like many other major European leagues, closes on August 31 which is a full three weeks into the start of the Premier League campaign, and nearly a full month into the campaign for sides in the EFL.

Here, we look at some of the top football transfer stories from the British and world media in The Sport Review's Grapevine, published twice a day during the summer transfer window.

The January transfer window would not be affected by the proposed changes.

Part of the reason is to avoid internal discord affecting certain clubs once the season is off and running.

This situation would not take place next year as this transfer would need to be concluded before the start of the season which would put both clubs in a better situation. All clubs in the league are discussing this plan and will decide on it in their meeting on September 7.

"That's why I think if the window is shut before the season starts everything is sorted out and we can get on with the football".

As Europe's major leagues all start at different points - France was a week before England, with Spain, Italy and Germany a week after - a Europe-wide change is not going to happen.
