Royals need Hammel to step up as Cardinals go for sweep

It's well known that cats chase birds, but a friendly feline who dashed onto the field Wednesday night at Busch Stadium appeared to be after the wrong type of Cardinal.

In what may have been a lucky mascot for Missouri's St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, an adorable kitten stopped play on Wednesday night (9 August) after running onto the field. The very next pitch, Yadier Molina knocked the ball out of the park for a grand slam, giving the Cardinals an ultimate win.

While Rally Cat was shortly escorted out of the stadium, his magic was already done, as the Cardinals would cruise the rest of the way to an 8-5 win.

Later in the game, Rally Cat was spotted by a fan being taken away from the ballpark in a crate.

All hail the Rally Cat!

Some were comparing it to the squirrel that held up a playoff game with Philadelphia in 2011 just before a Cardinals rally staved off elimination during an unlikely run to their 11th World Series title. "I looked at Lorenzo Cain, he was like laughing at me, all the players were laughing at me".

The Cardinals scored twice in the second, on an RBI sacrifice bunt from Leake and an RBI single from Matt Carpenter, and then tied the game on Jedd Gyorko's RBI single in the third.

Martinez gave the Cardinals their first lead in the fourth, rifling a solo homer to center, his ninth home run of the year. Maurer (1-5) took the loss.

Cahill lasted only 2 1/3 innings, giving up three runs, four hits and five walks with a strikeout.

Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar ended an 0-for-20 streak with a single in the sixth inning.

"I'm not a cat person, but I sure like that one", St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said after the game, per MLB.com.
