Attack on Shi'ite mosque in Afghan city kills more than 20

On July 24, over two dozen people were killed and more than 40 wounded after a auto bomb attack claimed by the Taliban struck a bus transporting government employees through a Shiite neighborhood in the capital Kabul.

Officials initially said two attackers had been involved in the incident, but in a statement issued by the governor, he said only one had been involved.

He reported seeing a body torn to pieces at the entrance, possibly that of the attacker, while others were lying in pools of blood inside, some still crying and moving.

Shiite Muslims have remained a constant target of militant attacks across various parts of the country over the past few months.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the assault.

Other images circulating on social media show bodies lying on the floor outside the mosque.

The death toll is expected to rise, according to local officals. The attack was claimed by the Taliban. So-called Islamic State (IS) said it had carried out that attack.

Some 300 people were believed to be present at the mosque.

It is believed the attack was a suicide bombing. Earlier, the news agency said 15 people were killed in the blast, citing a police representative.
