After taking Olympic gold in sensational fashion, Schooling the hunter has now become the hunted, following the emergence of the intriguing braces-and-tattoos figure of Dressel, as well as the previously unheralded Kristof.

The 20-year-old Ledecky won her 14th world gold, spanning three championships, with victory in the women's 800m freestyle on Saturday, but was happy for Dressel to take the limelight.

The 19-year-old University of Louisville sophomore swam the third leg on the USA gold-medal-winning 400-meter mixed-freestyle relay team, which beat the event's previous world record by more than three seconds.

Phelps had seven victories at the 2007 worlds in Melbourne, Australia - a prelude to his unprecedented eight golds the following year at the Beijing Olympics.

His historic achievements earned the University of Florida ace the award for the best male swimmer at the Budapest championships.

"It was tough. My legs were burning, I really had to dig deep and get my hands on the wall first", said Manuel, 20, who actually shared Olympic gold with Canada's Penny Oleksiak a year ago.

United States swimmer Caeleb Dressel might not have been a household name before the swimming world championships, but he will be soon. "As physically demanding as it is, mentally it's even more straining".
