Gandhinagar: Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani files her nomination papers for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Gandhinagar on July 28, 2017.

The announcement came after BJP Parliamentary Board met here to take stock of the Bihar situation following Nitish Kumar's resignation as the State Chief Minister.

"Amit Shah is a member of legislative assembly in Gujarat". Rajput, along with two other leaders, joined BJP after quitting Congress on Thursday. The functioning of BJP-NDA in Rajya Sabha has been handled by finance minister Arun Jaitley, but the presence of Shah would also give him an opportunity to contribute in the alliance.

"Amit Shah and Smriti Irani to contest Rajya Sabha polls from Gujarat", said JP Nadda after BJP Parliamentary meet.

Shah is on a 110-day non-continuous tour across states, and UP holds special significance for the BJP ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha election, as it had won an unprecedented 71 of the total 80 seats in the 2014 polls.

Out of the 9 retiring members, four are from the Trinamool Congress, two from the Congress, two from the BJP and one from the CPI-M.

Talking to media after the trio filed their nominations, BBJP in-charge for Gujarat, Bhupendra Yadav exuded confidence that all the party candidates will win the election easily. The seat fall vacant due to demise of Union Minister Anil Madhav Dave.

Rajput is pitted against senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel, who has been re-nominated for the August 8 Rajya Sabha election in Gujarat.
