Terminally ill baby Charlie Gard to spend final days in hospice

Staff will work in shifts after a judge ruled the terminally-ill 11-month-old baby would spend the last part of his life in a hospice.

Connie Yates and Chris Gard had asked to be allowed to to take their son home to die after ending their legal case.

But doctors caring for Charlie at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London said it is not practical to provide life-support treatment to Charlie at the couple's home for days. If your dad or grandmother is dying of cancer or lung disease and they are in pain, can not breathe without distress or can not do anything but moan and suffer, then many would say the time has come to stop medical interventions and let the loved one go.

The staff at Great Ormond Street Hospital stepped forward as their bosses said the baby must be sent to a hospice by tomorrow.

Grant Armstrong, the lawyer for Ms Yates and Charlie's father Chris Gard, paid tribute to the nurses who have offered to help, working on their days off or between shifts.

CNN reports that an attorney for Charlie's parents said they objected to the "brutality" of moving Charlie to hospice, only to have him die shortly after.

The child suffers from permanent brain damage and can not breathe on his own.

On Wednesday, Mr Justice Francis said Charlie would be moved to a hospice after 12pm on Thursday if there was no agreement.

Emerson said his daughter suffered from a 17-hour epilepsy fit, and afterward doctors told him that Jorja's case basically was hopeless.

He said the "window of opportunity has been lost" to help Charlie, according to Sky News.

The dispute first made headlines months ago, when Charlie's parents wanted to take him to the United States to undergo experimental treatment.

The London hospital insists the family must find six nurses and three specialist doctors to care for him if they want to manage his final days.

The Telegraph said the parents wanted Charlie moved to their flat in Bedfont, west London, but a judge refused.

Charlie has a rare genetic condition and will die once his life support is removed.

The decision concludes a bitter five-month legal fight from Ms Yates and Mr Gard, whose appeal to give their son treatment was previously rejected by the European Court of Human Rights.

"We have decided it's no longer in Charlie's interest to have treatment". However, the hospital recently agreed to consider new evidence involving Charlie's condition before taking him off the ventilator. It's known to cause brain damage and muscle weakness.
