India arrests 7 Kashmir separatists for terror funding

Public transport, shops, other businesses and educational institutions remained closed nearly across the valley.

The statement further read that the Agency has conducted widespread searches on suspected persons in the state, Delhi and Haryana and incriminating documents, electronic devices, cash and other valuables worth crores were unearthed during those searches.

Seven separatist leaders including hardline Syed Ali Geelani's son-in-law Altaf Ahmad Shah and moderate leader and cleric Mirwaiz Umar's Farooq close aide Shahid-ul-Islam were arrested by National Investigation Agency (NIA) in terror funding case in Jammu and Kashmir.

According to reports, a shutdown call of the Hurriyat against the arrest of seven separatist leaders did not receive adequate response yesterday, which also reflected how the Hurriyat was losing ground in the Valley.

The houses of those arrested had been raided by NIA sleuths last month.

The pro-freedom activists have been arrested in connection with J&K terror funding case under Sections 120B, 121, 121A of the IPC and Sections 13, 16, 17, 18, 20, 38, 39 and 40 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, notes The Tribune (TT).

An Indian court on Tuesday ordered the arrest of seven Kashmiri separatists for allegedly funding militant groups and stoking unrest in the disputed Himalayan region.

Apart from income tax notices that were sent to the Hurriyat leaders in 2002, this is the first time that a nodal agency is digging into insurgency-related charges. The NIA told the court that custodial interrogation of the accused was needed. The raids were carried out after NIA launched Preliminary Enquiry (PE) into the alleged hawala funding to separatist leaders to fuel protests and violence in Kashmir. The mastermind stone-pelters appeared on NIA's radar following an analysis of several confrontations between locals and security personnel.

Atif was arrested on charges of providing weapons and ammunition to the separatists and Asif was said to be a part of the conspiracy.
