Derrick Rose in 'serious talks' to sign with Cavaliers

Free-agent point guard Derrick Rose and the Cleveland Cavaliers are in serious talks on a potential one-year contract, ESPN reported on Thursday. However, there is apparently one former MVP that could do just that, and - the Cavs hope - salvage their offseason. Now Cleveland Cavs rumors are suggesting that the National Basketball Association free agent is interested in joining LeBron James on the roster. Ball likely will start for the Purple and Gold, but Rose wouldn't be a bad addition as a backup point guard.

Rose is remembered best for his dynamic play from 2009 to 2012, where he averaged at least 20.8 PPG in each of those three seasons with the Chicago Bulls. The Cavaliers would have to pay about $12 million in taxes on the roughly $2.1 million deal. Past year with the Knicks, Rose averaged 18 points a game with 3.8 rebounds and 4.4 assists in 64 games, shooting 47 percent from the field.

However, Rose is a liability on defense, so the Cavs won't gain anything on that end of the court when he replaces Kyrie Irving in the lineup. However, Rose still a career low from deep at 21 percent.

Rose has averaged 19.5 points and 6.0 assists since being drafted first overall by Chicago in 2008. Neither of which would move the dial much, especially not against competition like the Golden State Warriors.
