Wimbledon 2017: Johanna Konta loses semi to Venus Williams

Johanna Konta became the first British woman to reach the Wimbledon semifinals in 39 years on Tuesday, while five-time champion Venus Williams also made history as the oldest semifinalist since 1994.

Five-time victor Williams, 37 and seeded 10, will be aiming for her ninth Wimbledon singles final, and victory on Saturday would make her the oldest women's grand slam champion since tennis turned professional.

Johanna Konta became the first British female player in 40 years to advance to Wimbledon Semis when she defeated top rated Simona Halep in the quarter finals which held yesterday.

Williams then turned the screw on her sixth-seeded opponent, breaking twice more to wrap up the match in an hour and 13 minutes.

Johanna Konta will almost double her earnings for the year should she secure an historic victory over Venus Williams in tomorrow's Wimbledon semi-final.

The victor is guaranteed to play a lower-ranked player for the title, with 14th seed Garbine Muguruza, the 2016 French Open champion, facing world No.87 Magdalena Rybarikova in Thursday night's first semi-final.

Rain is forecast through the day, with play to begin on Centre Court under the roof cover.

Yet victory over Williams will trump that achievement as Konta's biggest payday and boost her prize money income for the year by 79 per cent to £2.5m.

Konta after losing the opening game in the opening set bounced back to take the subsequent game. I just wanted to make the game, I wanted to play better, and I could not. And this really means a lot to me.

"I did think of that". "I wanted to give them more, but I didn't and I was sad for them". I couldn't have asked for more [this year].

"Obviously it's very short after the match, and I'm a little bit disappointed. I will only ever try to do that in a positive way". Rybarikova, an unseeded player, had a brilliant run through Wimbledon, but Muguruza proved to be too much on Thursday.

Venus also reached the Australian Open final in January, but eventually lost to her sister Serena.

Williams used the vast weapons garnered through years of experience to unsettle Konta's rhythm - particularly on the Briton's previously solid serve. The crowd were very nice to me.
