Crews fight dozens of California wildfires amid July heatwave

Three new California fires made trouble Tuesday. The blaze has destroyed at least 17 structures, but authorities could not say how many of those were homes. 55 other structures have been damaged or destroyed. An inspection team is trying to determine the extent of the damage.

Nearly all of Little Fort and the Dunn Lake area were ordered evacuated by Friday night, while the remainder of Little Fort north of Lemeiux Creek plus Hallamore Lake area were placed under an evacuation alert Friday evening, and then evacuated Saturday.

In Santa Barbara County, at least 3 500 people remained out of their homes due to a pair of fires.

One of the fires grew to 12 square miles, traversing a mountain range and heading south toward coastal Goleta.

The larger of the two charred more than 116km² of dry brush and has burned 20 structures since it broke out.

Sarah Gustafson, who moved from Washington to California seven months ago, was out running errands when she saw the pillar of smoke rising near her home. "The sky was orange and black, you could see flames up on the ridge".

Skrepnek urges residents to follow the rules and guidelines of all evacuation alerts and orders. They have opened their wallets and their homes.

Crews also were using an air attack against another blaze about 50 miles north that exploded in size to 37.5 square miles. More than 10,000 people have been evacuated.

"My community has some really skilled firefighters, like a lot of First Nations reserves, and they came together and they stopped that wildfire from wiping out that whole community", Chief Ryan Day said in an interview. The fire has burned almost 12,000 acres.

In Colorado, crews were winding down the fight against a wildfire that temporarily forced hundreds of people to evacuate near the resort town of Breckenridge. The fire has not spread since it broke out Wednesday and was still less than a square mile Sunday.

While taking the flag was a symbolic action, it was also a way to prevent it from catching on fire and igniting the entire home.

"Fire helicopters dipping water from the Truckee River, rolling rocks and fire debris has been and continue to be a danger to the public", the service warned.

Fires in the Canadian province of British Columbia have forced 14,000 people from their homes and disrupted logging and mining operations.

Logging contractor John McNeil's crews have been double-shifting since late last week, when they can, cutting fire breaks around the mills and northeast boundary of 100 Mile House, instead of stacking up timber for his employer. We have bulldozers working on that fire 24 hours a day as we speak.

"We're going to be heading to Vancouver and then switching over to Prince George to help with the fires that they so desperately need help with", said Joey Miswagon, a firefighter from Cross Lake who is part of the Manitoba group.
