F1 bosses aim dig at Lewis Hamilton over London snub

The future of the British Grand Prix on the Formula 1 calendar is in serious doubt after Silverstone's owners triggered a break clause in their contract on Tuesday.

Silverstone has an irreplaceable history with Formula One, having been the site of the very first world championship F1 race in 1950. It is one highlight of the British sporting summer, it is unthinkable to have an F1 season without a trip to where it all began, but then again that was said about the French and German Grand Prix, and look what happened to them.

The BRDC and Silverstone want to continue their relationship with F1, but they will not do so at the cost of financial ruin.

"It would be shocking to lose Silverstone from the calendar and even more shocking to lose a British Grand Prix when you consider 80% of the teams are based within the United Kingdom and how much the United Kingdom contributes to F1 from a historical point of view".

But a law change earlier this year overturned a ban on motor sport races taking place on England's roads.

On Monday night Liberty Media, the new owners of F1, said the BRDC decision is "regrettable" and accused the organisation of "posturing".

Speaking to Sky News' Ian King, Sir Jackie insisted the United Kingdom can't afford to lose the race as he highlighted the 143,000 people employed in the F1 industry in the country.

The future of the British Grand Prix is under threat following a decision from the owner of Silverstone to cease hosting the race after 2019.

Valtteri Bottas, Max Verstappen and many more race around London as we prepare for the 2017 British GP, live on Sky Sports. We have to stop losing money", he added."We can no longer let our passion for the sport rule our heads.

The BRDC has indicated that in 2015 he had lost 2.8 million pounds sterling (approximately $4.6 million CDN) and 4.8 million pounds (7.97 million dollars) past year.

"We hope that they will leave Trafalgar Square awed and inspired, with an eye on any one of the myriad of career opportunities in British Motorsport and beyond".

"I'd question how it's been managed and the negotiation they had in the first place".

New F1 boss, Chase Carey has confirmed his desire to "keep a British GP" on the calendar in the past, but made no direct reference to Silverstone.

Numerous circuits that appear of the F1 calendar make a huge financial loss when hosting Grands Prix. We are the only credible venue as there would be so many issues with holding a race in London.

He told me the Silverstone contract was one of the most generous in F1 and was the longest-running.
