'Summer of Hell' at Penn Station kicks off this week

Brendan Delany, who commutes two hours each way from New Jersey to NY, directed his ire at Amtrak, which owns and operates Penn Station.

Major Amtrak track work at New York's Penn Station is reducing service in and out of D.C.'s Union Station through the end of August.

The station handles more than 1,300 weekday trains on 21 tracks.

"We like to think it's quiet because a lot of people did their homework", New Jersey Transit spokesman Charles Ingoglia said while standing outside the Hoboken train and ferry stations.

As a crowd of rail commuters heading into NY grows on the first day of extensive repairs to tracks and signals in Penn Station so, too, does the confusion.

Democratic senators from NY and New Jersey are calling on President Donald Trump to honor a commitment made under President Barack Obama to fund a project to build a second rail tunnel between the two states. New Jersey Transit is diverting some rush hour trains to Hoboken, where passengers can switch to trains operated by the Port Authority of NY and New Jersey, or to ferries. The official New Jersey Transit described this episode as minor derailment in association with the Amtrak officials operating the station and tracks referred this as a "slow speed derailment". "Things are on time, things are working well, buses are filling up, the ferries are working very, very well and our trains are all on time", MTA Chairman Joe Lhota told reporters at Jamaica Station on Monday.

With the uncertainty of how painful their commutes may be, some say they may avoid NJ TRANSIT all together.

Now the situation is a bit strict, where the New Jersey Transit Rail Service has suspended it's all in and out trains from Penn Station, which disrupted the area's population who has to take a different route to reach their destinations.

Still, the real test for the "new normal" won't come until the weather, equipment problems or police activity somewhere along the train line interrupts service.
