Ahead of Putin meeting, Trump says he'll 'represent our country well'

In a photo op before their meeting, Mr Trump said he "absolutely" expected Mexico to pay for the wall.

"Absolutely", he told reporters, responding to a shouted question about whether Mexico would still pay for the wall.

That omission was confirmed by Mexican officials and the White House's own statement after the meeting, which mentioned trade, drug trafficking and the political crisis in Venezuela but was silent on the border wall.

Since the cancellation of the trip, the two leaders have since spoken by phone, and a series of high-level meetings between the two countries have eased the tension. In January, it was believed that Nieto canceled a meeting with Trump because of the policy, particularly his demands that Mexico is going to foot the bill.

Since his election, every once in a while, Trump still makes perfunctory remarks about building the wall, but he has bigger fish to fry, namely trying to get his execrable health plan passed and dealing with all the Russia-related scandals.

Trump told this morning's joint press conference with Peña Nieto, whom he called his friend, that he thought they had made "very good progress" at today's meeting, their first since Trump took office in January. "When will [Nieto] dare to say to his face and in public that Mexico will not pay?" Nieto turned his head toward Trump, seemingly in disbelief.

Now, the question becomes: "Does Trump really have a plan to squeeze the Pesos out of Mexico, or is this just bluster created to put pressure on the Mexican government in other negotiations?"

"We'll see how it all turns out", he added.

Aside from the border wall, Trump said the USA and Mexico have made "very good progress" on renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement.

President Nieto expressed similar sentiments, praising the "flowing dialogue" on issues like "the negotiation of NAFTA; to continue working in terms of cooperation, especially for security, for the security of both nations, especially in our borders; and, of course, also working on migration issues".
