Tour de France: Mark Cavendish taken to hospital after crash

"We chose to disqualify Peter Sagan from the 2017 Tour de France because he endangered seriously several other riders, including Mark Cavendish, in the final meters of the sprint which happened in Vittel", race jury President Philippe Marien said.

"We will apply article 12.104 of the rules of the UCI.in which case commissaires (the race jury) can decide to enforce a judgement to disqualify a rider". He was trying to follow the wheel of the eventual stage victor, France's Arnaud Démare, by squeezing between Peter Sagan and the barrier, and as Cavendish tried to make space, Sagan bumped into him, sending the Manxman into the barrier.

Cavendish was taken to hospital with hand and shoulder injuries. "He came to me and I had to defend".

The 50 points for winning also put him in contention to claim the green jersey for sprinters.

His crash came on a bend just inside the final kilometre but Cavendish's fall looked more damaging, just inside the final 100 metres.

Immediately after the crash Cavendish told reporters that he got on well with Sagan but he didn't get why he elbowed him, he said: "If he came across that's one thing, but the elbow I'm not a fan of him putting his elbow in me like that".

When he left for hospital, he was also wearing a sling.

"Apart from a few abrasions and some lacerations he's doing fine".

Sagan drifted into Cavendish's line, and appeared to have his elbow out as he bumped into Cavendish, but Cavendish may have made contact first, forcing Sagan to throw out his elbow to balance his bike. The first left dozens of riders on the ground, including current race leader Geraint Thomas of Team Sky. "Half the peloton is racing not to lose time, half the peloton is aiming for the stage". "It's certainly a great start [to the Tour de France for Sky], but there is still 18 days to go".

"It's ok, both times I managed to take off quite a bit of speed (before crashing)", said Thomas. "There was a crash in front of us and again I had nowhere to go".

"If I was Sagan, I'd apologize for that", said Roger Hammond, Cavendish's sports director at Dimension Data.

Martin's general classification bid is perhaps secondary, but he insists he would rather be on a team celebrating regular stage wins than one built entirely around an assault on the yellow jersey.
