Jean-Claude Juncker tells near-empty European Union parliament: 'You are ridiculous'

European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker today slammed the European Parliament, saying it was "ridiculous, very ridiculous" so few MEPs had turned up to watch him speak.

The president of Parliament, Antonio Tajani ordered Juncker to be more "respectful" after his continuous outbursts as only 30 something MEPs tunred up, out of 700.

Tajani kept asking that Juncker adopt a "more respectful attitude" and he added: "You may criticise the Parliament but the Commission does not control the Parliament".

"You may criticize the parliament, yes, but the [European] Commission does not control the parliament, it's the parliament that should be controlling the Commission", he said, to a smattering of applause. "The commission is under the control of the parliament, but the parliament has to respect even the presidencies of smaller countries, which the parliament is not doing".

This fueled the fire for Juncker as he held the whole parliament to account for not respecting Malta as it is the smallest member state in the bloc.

"The fact that there's about 30 members of parliament present in this debate only really illustrates the fact that parliament is not serious", he said.

"The European Parliament is ridiculous, totally ridiculous", Juncker told the chamber, which seats 751 deputies.

The exchange at the legislature in Strasbourg, France, was even more unbelievable since Juncker and Tajani belong to the same EPP Christian Democratic group.

"The Commission does not control the parliament". Philippe Lamberts of the Greens groups, one of the few to show up, was seen applauding the rebuke of Juncker.

Juncker personally called out German Chancellor Angela Merkel and newly elected French President Emmanuel Macron's over their absence during his rant.

"If Mr. Muscat would have been Mrs. Merkel - tough to imagine - or Mr. Macron - easier to imagine - we would have had a full house".

To Juncker's renewed assertion that the absence of 95% of MEPs from the hemicycle made the institution "ridiculous", Tajani replied: "Please use different language".
