Despicable Me 3 review: Dir. Pierre Coffin, Kyle Balda (2017)

These movies all made a ton of money and "Despicable Me 3" was an inevitability. But the first "Despicable Me" introduced a fresh, original concept - the evil genius who becomes a loving dad - and watching a once-clever franchise reduced to a cliché is just sad. You know, Gru and Lucy mushed together.
Without spoiling too much, Gru and Dru team up to try to get the diamond back from Bratt.
Shortly after the movie's so-so opening, Gru and family are invited to an all-expenses paid trip to visit a twin brother that Gru had no idea existed. In theory it could've worked, but the chalk and cheese dynamic only goes so far.
"Because when we do our voice sessions, they're always separate".
Gru (Steve Carell), left, faces off against Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker) in "Despicable Me 3".
The film very much leaves things with the potential for more, but the wise move would be to quit while you're still ahead.
"Obviously", Gru's mother (Julie Andrews) tells him, "I picked second".
Still, one fan just didn't have time for all you new Carell lovers: "if you dont want steve carell at his 2006 you dont deserve him at his 2017". Bratt's bratty, all right, but he's simply boring, and even a comical, cartoon adventure needs a terrific villain to truly succeed.
Children's movies often try to hard to slide jokes in for adults - and the Despicable Me franchise has been guilty of that in the past - but this movie flips that script, building characters that are created to appeal to adults, like Lucy and Bratt.
The stars of 'Despicable Me 3′ have admitted they would like to carry on making these films for years to come.
Watch a clip from "Despicable Me 3" below... There are also long periods of time where the jokes were not strong enough but thankfully the minions also return, and their subplot is injected throughout helping to bring more humour to the film with a much more visual aspect.
The Minions are still in there, because they're why half the audience shows up, but given less prominence than previously.
In Cars 3, you will get blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast cars, the legendary Lighting McQueen finds himself pushed out of the sport that he loves. Carell has stated he doesn't know that he would reprise his role as Gru in a fourth film (but did insist he would be willing to do a cameo in future Minions movies) and I think he makes a wise choice.
Despicable Me 3 - which also features the voices of South Park's Trey Parker, Steve Coogan and Julie Andrews - opens in USA and United Kingdom cinemas on Friday, June 30, while The Graham Norton Show continues next Friday (June 30) at 10.35pm on BBC One with a special highlights compilation.
