Crews gain control of Southern California's Placerita Fire

Firefighters say the blaze is around 10 percent contained.

That announcement came after residents of Upper Bear Valley were evacuated as forecasted winds were projected to move the Brian Head Fire toward the area northwest of Panguitch.

The Utah fire began near the ski resort town of Brian Head, generally known for weekend getaway homes for Las Vegas residents.

It said the Department of Transportation and local utility companies were assessing damage to roads and utilities and making repairs in anticipation of residents returning to Brian Head in the near future.

A wildfire in southwestern Colorado has burned at least one home and forced the evacuation of about 140 others, as well as a busy campground.

Authorities said Monday they're ordering more evacuations at the fire that has torched more than 67 square miles (174 square kilometers) and cost more than $7 million to fight. The fire started after a single vehicle collision. And in Arizona, firefighters had to ground aircraft used in fighting the Frye Fire because of drones being flown in the vicinity of the blaze, said Bureau of Land Management spokesman Dennis Godfrey.

On Monday, the wind was pushing flames in the direction of two mountain communities, Poppet Flats and Silent Valley, Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department Capt. Lucas Spelman said.

Overnight, hand crews, backed by bulldozers, were going to try to get more line around the fire to stop it from spreading.

High temperatures and hot, dry winds will continue to stoke the flames of a wildfire burning in the San Jacinto Mountains south of Beaumont on Tuesday as fire authorities announce voluntary evacuations in nearby communities.

The Santa Clarita fire, which started on Sunday on the 14 Freeway after a vehicle rolled over onto dry brush, had burned 870 acres as of Monday, according to Christopher Craft, an official with the Santa Clarita fire department.

Crews will continue to secure the southern perimeter of the fire to slow its progression toward Mammoth Creek. In Southern California, a wildfire broke out after a auto crashed on a freeway and prompted evacuations of some nearby homes in the city of Santa Clarita.

The fire remains under investigation and no citations have been issued.

There is a TFR (Temporary Flight Restriction) in place over the fire area. In a June 17 recording, a man tells dispatchers he needs help with a fire getting out of control. Mayer is located about 70 miles north of Phoenix.

As of Tuesday (June 27) afternoon the fire was 75 percent contained.

Chad Hanson, co-founder the John Muir Project, co-authored a 2009 study that was one of the first to dispute the theory that bug-infested trees burn faster. The fire has also burned in the Dixie National Forest.
