Russian hacking 'a big Dem HOAX'

Ex-Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson's testimony Wednesday should mark the definitive end of "Russia hacked the election" hysteria.

He demurred on the final number of US states whose voting systems were scanned or probed by the Russian government, saying that he had not had access to intelligence since he left government.

Mr Trump also claimed on Thursday that former homeland security chief Jeh Johnson "is latest top intelligence official to state there was no grand scheme between Trump & Russia".

Federal officials told lawmakers at a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing Wednesday they have determined that Russian Federation interfered with election-related platforms prior to the USA presidential elections in 2016, The Hill reported Wednesday.

Spicer was asked whether Trump stands by the USA intelligence community's conclusion that Russian Federation tampered with the 2016 election and said only that he hadn't "sat down and asked [Trump] about his specific reaction".

Trump also asked why the Obama administration "didn't stop" Russian Federation if it found the nation to be meddling in the 2016 election.

Liles was testifying before the Senate Intelligence Committee, which is investigating Russia's efforts to meddle in the 2016 presidential election, and his remarks add some clarity to the breadth of the Kremlin's cyber mischief. "Why didn't they stop them?", Trump asked.

In addition to scanning voting systems for vulnerabilities, USA officials have said Russians hacked and engineered the release of emails from the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta.

"It's all a big Dem HOAX!" the president tweeted.

However, "In Illinois, more than 90% of the almost 90,000 records stolen by Russian state actors contained drivers license numbers, and a quarter contained the last four digits of voters' Social Security numbers", according to Ken Menzel, general counsel of the Illinois State Board of Elections, the piece said.

But a member of the president's private legal team, Jay Sekulow, has said he believes Trump is not under investigation because the team has not received notice from Mueller.

Johnson, who was homeland security secretary from December 2013 to January 2017, appeared Wednesday before the House Intelligence Committee.

The new report comes in the immediate wake of Congressional hearings on the vulnerability of USA election systems.

"The DNC has and will continue to cooperate with law enforcement on Russia's interference in our election", DNC spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said in a statement responding to Trump's tweet.

JOHNSON: I would think about grants to state election officials to help them harden their cybersecurity.

Mueller took over the Russian Federation probe in May after Trump fired James Comey.

The Russia issue has cast a shadow over President Trump's first five months in office.

"The intelligence community has no doubt that the Russians attacked the DNC in an effort to disrupt our election". One last shot at me. South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy asked Johnson at one point in the hearing.
