'Transformers' tops box office but is biggest in China

Jun 26, 2017, 01:35

With news that Transformers: The Last Knight has now officially brought in $69.1 million stateside - a franchise low at the domestic box office - the film will need all the worldwide help it can get in order to simply earn a profit.

Whether audiences have had enough with the incessant CGI explosions of director Michael Bay (who has helmed all the movies up to this point) or their long running times with little attention to storyline, "The Last Knight" looks like everyone's breaking point. "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" (2011) grossed $41.4 million on its Wednesday launch, and "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" opened with $73.5 million.

The Transformers series always has made millions internationally and it should make up ground from a slow start when it launches in 42 global markets including China and the United Kingdom.

Since it's the lowest-grossing film of the franchise so far, it would seem audiences are generally exhausted of the Transformers films.

Saving the world falls upon the shoulders of an unlikely alliance: Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg); Bumblebee; an English Lord (Sir Anthony Hopkins); and an Oxford Professor (Laura Haddock). Together, the three characters must race to uncover the secret history of the Transformers before the world is destroyed.

The director, for his part, has previously claimed he was set to walk away from the Transformers series, before returning to make another movie.

And critics, who have never been kind to Bay or the franchise, really dug into "The Last Knight", as the movie only got a 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Not only did it waste yet another minute of the audience's time, but it also realized everyone's worst fear-there will nearly definitely be another film, and it will probably be just as bad, if not worse.

With all due respect for viewers for whom each new Transformers movie is a gift: lucky you.

This image released by Paramount Pictures shows Optimus Prime in a scene from, "Transformers: The Last Knight". It will now be up to newly installed Paramount chairman-CEO Jim Gianopulos to decide the fate of any further chapters beyond the spinoff. Almost a month after opening, Patty Jenkins' "Wonder Woman" continues to be a major draw.

Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman is battling it out for second with Cars 3 with both films nabbing $25.2 million, although that may change when the final tally comes in on Monday. Still, somehow and some way, Michael Bay's latest release has been able to sit on top of the box office through Friday as it held off Wonder Woman and Cars 3. It fell 53 percent domestically, a relatively steep decline for an animated event film. The film has been slow on the uptake with a mere $40 million in sales in North America.

Eyes on this: Rounding out the top five is Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez On Me, with Demetrius Shipp Jr.as the late rapper. Also opening in limited release is Lionsgate's The Big Sick, which opened strong with $435,000 from just five theaters for a $87,000 per-screen average. Judd Apatow produced the pic, which premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.
