Cars 3 Takes Pole Position At The US Box Office

CARS in 2006 wasn't Pixar's best, in fact, even as a kid I could tell it wasn't a great movie.

Disney and Pixar's "Cars 3" is headed for a $51 million-plus USA debut, the lowest in the franchise but easily enough to chase the competition off the road and win the weekend. The film, directed by Brian Fee, will wrest the weekend crown from holdover "Wonder Woman", which is projected to earn $39 million in its third week for a domestic total of almost $275 million.

Taking the third spot was the Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez on Me, exceeding expectations with $27.1 million. The final new entry was Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow's The Book Of Henry; the limited release drummed up just $1.4 million for the weekend. The latest revival of the original Mummy made in 1932 took in $13.9 million in its second weekend.

In "Cars 3", Owen Wilson returns as the voice of Lightning McQueen.

"Wonder Woman" has some of the greatest legs in the history of show business. Titled after Shakur's 1996 fourth studio album of the same name, the film stars Demetrius Shipp Jr.as Shakur and Kat Graham, Lauren Cohan, Hill Harper, and Danai Gurira in supporting roles.

Fifth place went to 47 Meters Down, the adventures of two sisters who fend off a shark attack after going cage diving.

And the bachelorette-party comedy, Rough Night, was seventh with $8-million. Pinkett-Smith slammed the movie as "deeply hurtful".

Though these kind of movies historically never do well in theaters (everyone waits until these titles hit cable/streaming), Sony was hoping with a cast that included Scarlett Johansson, Kate McKinnon, and "Broad City" star Ilana Glazer, there would be a lot of girls' night out treks to the movies. Lucia Aniello directed the film.
