It's been just over a year since Philando Castile was fataly shot by St. Anthony, Minnesota police officer Jeronimo Yanez during a routine traffic stop in St. Paul. Castile notifies the officer that he is carrying a firearm, and the officer tells him "don't reach for it" and "don't pull it out". After pulling Castile's auto over, Yanez exits his cruiser and tells Castile his brake light is broken.
When the shooting stops, the video shows Officer Yanez standing at the auto window with his gun drawn for some time.
The video shows Yanez pulling Castile over and approaching the auto and talking to the driver.
Yanezwas acquitted Friday on all counts: second-degree manslaughter and two counts of reckless discharge of a firearm.
Before Castile finished that sentence, Yanez pulled his gun out of the holster.
At the trial, Yanez testified Castile didn't follow his directions to not reach for the gun, but instead put his hand on a pistol and pulled it out of his trousers pocket. The video was among the evidence gathered in the investigation and used in the trial.
Yanez, a St. Anthony officer, testified he feared for his life because Castile put his hand on his firearm, not his wallet or identification papers, and was pulling the gun from his pocket.
After the first shot, Mr Castile's body is thrown to the right.
"I wept when I saw the dashcam video", Nekima Levy-Pounds, a civil rights attorney who is running for Minneapolis mayor, told the Star Tribune.
Actually if we did say more, it emulate exactly what Castile's mother, Valerie, said in her "f*ck the police" rant on Facebook Live after Yanez'snot guilty verdict was announced.
After Yanez was acquitted, the city of St. Anthony released a statement Friday saying "the public will be best served if Officer Yanez is no longer a police officer in our city".
When Officer Yanez opened fire, another officer near the vehicle jumped back, and Officer Yanez began yelling at the driver. He then asks Castile for his driver's license and insurance. Yanez can be heard talking to other officers, who are asking him questions.
Investigators released the video Tuesday, just days after a jury cleared Officer Jeronimo Yanez of manslaughter and other charges in the death of Philando Castile.
