London police ponder manslaughter in tower fire

London authorities began inspecting buildings near Grenfell Tower where the fire broke out and injured several people.

The high-rise buildings on the Chalcots estate in Camden were being emptied on Friday evening after firefighters said they "could not guarantee our residents' safety", local council leader Georgia Gould said.

Ms Gould said it was expected the work would take three or four weeks, adding: "We realise that this is hugely distressing for everyone affected and we will be doing all we can, alongside the London Fire Brigade and other authorities, to support our residents at this hard time".

"We have liaised with residents at Durham House and will work to ensure they continue to feel safe and comfortable in their homes".

The move was prompted after the Camden Council learned that the buildings had combustible cladding like the one on Grenfell Tower, where at least 79 people died in a fast-moving fire last week.

British Prime Minister Theresa May says initial tests on other high-rise buildings after the London fire tragedy have shown that the cladding on some of them is combustible.

"Consumers who believe they may have a Hotpoint fridge freezer model number FF175BP or FF175BG should call our freephone hotline on 0800 316 3826 or visit hotpointservice.co.uk/fridgefreezer so that we can register their details and contact them with further information".

A total of 79 people are either dead or missing presumed dead as a result of the Kensington blaze, according to police. They will then be sent to hotels across London.

The fire spread quickly through the tower block, leading to concerns that cladding on the building did not meet fire safety rules.

"I remain really concerned though that we do not have a complete picture", she said.

Tauranga City Council general manager environmental services Rebecca Perrett said the council was supporting the ministry's efforts.

The detective superintendent also said she is anxious that the authorities might not have a true sense of how many people were in the building, in part because people who lived there or knew someone who did might be fearful of having their immigration status reviewed.

Heartbreaking messages written on red London Fire Brigade T-shirts offer poignant tributes alongside flowers, toys and candles at the shrine.

To make sure everyone comes forward, London Mayor Sadiq Khan pledged to seek an amnesty for people who may have been living in the public housing block illegally.

Edward Strange said: "We've had two fires here since the cladding was put on and both fires didn't spread so I don't see what the problem is". Premier Inn said Friday it had "concerns" about the material used on some of its buildings, though it is different from the type used at Grenfell Tower.
