Trump Under Investigation for Firing FBI Director James Comey

Jun 19, 2017, 00:12

Yet Trump's angry tweets on Friday underscored the near-impossible challenge his advisers and legal team have in trying to get him to avoid weighing in on an active probe.

Dianne Feinstein, top Democrat on the US Senate Judiciary Committee, said she was "increasingly concerned" that Trump will fire both Mueller and Rosenstein.

Trump demonstrated Friday morning that the Russian Federation probe continues to consume his attention, tweeting a stream of messages decrying the controversy. Trump confirmed in a tweet Friday he was under investigation and appeared to take aim at Rosenstein, calling the investigation a "witch hunt".

Comey told a Senate panel last week he believed Trump fired him to undermine the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Russian Federation probe.

This would seem to confirm numerous newspaper reports that special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation had in fact expanded to include possible obstruction of justice by Trump.

Next week's witnesses include officials from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security, election officials, and an expert on election security. Attention is focused on the question of obstruction simply because so much of Trump's campaign to deep-six the investigation has been conducted openly, at full volume.

He reiterated tweets from Thursday morning about the investigation.

That tweet came a day after The Washington Post reported that Mueller had expanded his probe to look into whether Trump himself tried to obstruct justice by allegedly pressing top intelligence officials to intervene in ongoing investigations. The official demanded anonymity because the official was not authorized to be named discussing the deliberations.

Vice President Mike Pence has also hired a private lawyer to represent his interests in the expanding probe.

Trump really outdid himself there by managing to lie twice in the confines of 140 characters: Rosenstein isn't investigating him, Mueller is; and by Trump's own account, he had made a decision to fire Comey long before Rosenstein authored a memo that the White House originally said initiated Comey's downfall. It wasn't clear whether he was basing his tweet on direct knowledge or on media reports.

Trump has already come under intense scrutiny for firing FBI director James Comey, an act that led to accusations that President Trump did so because Comey refused to drop his investigation into the alleged Russian tampering with the 2016 presidential election.

At a ceremony last month to welcome Associate Attorney General Rachel Brand, the Justice Department's third-ranking official, Rosenstein joked awkwardly about being at the center of criticism since taking office, according to people who were in the room.

"We may have our differences, but we do well, in times like these, to remember that everyone who serves in our nation's capital is here because, above all, they love our country", Trump said. Sad!" he wrote. "Despite the phony Witch Hunt going on in America, the economic & jobs numbers are great.
