Friend says Trump is considering 'terminating' Mueller

Jun 17, 2017, 11:21

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said Tuesday he's seen no basis for firing Robert Mueller, the former FBI director he appointed as special counsel to oversee an investigation into potential coordination between the Trump presidential campaign and Russian Federation.

Ruddy, who had been at the White House Monday, told PBS' Judy Woodruff that "I think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel". The White House finally said Tuesday evening that Trump has "no intention" of firing Mueller, amid speculation and concern that he was weighing that option.

But Ryan said he trusted Mueller, who was named to his post by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, to conduct a fair investigation.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich sparked a mini-meltdown in the media Monday with a tweet challenging the fairness of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, an informal adviser to the President, questioned whether the special counsel investigation would be impartial.

If you thought that the James Comey firing or the preceding efforts by President Trump to encourage Comey to drop his investigation into Michael Flynn were considered obstruction of justice, then you will certainly think that this tidbit of gossip would be considered obstruction as well.

Sessions' appearance before the intelligence committee is an indication of just how much the Russian Federation investigation has shaded his tenure. "If there were not good cause, it would not matter to me what anybody said", he said.

[B] ehind the scenes, the president soon began entertaining the idea of firing Mr. Mueller even as his staff tried to discourage him from something they believed would turn a bad situation into a catastrophe, according to several people with direct knowledge of Mr. Trump's interactions.

Schiff says that if Trump fires Mueller, Congress might name its own independent counsel to investigate the case. Rosenstein would be the one to fire Mueller, which he repeatedly assured senators Tuesday he would not consider without "good cause". He is "confident", he said, that Mueller has full independence.

The mere fact that Republicans believe that Trump should take action against Mueller shows the fear they have that Trump may have done something wrong. The person demanded anonymity to discuss strategy on the sensitive matter. "Ruddy never spoke to the president regarding this issue", Spicer said.

Because Sessions had recused himself from the Russia investigation over his connection to Trump's campaign and his undisclosed meetings with the Russian ambassador, it was Rosenstein's decision to appoint a special counsel to lead the investigation.

Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller, declined to comment on the issues Gingrich and others have raised.

The former Federal Bureau of Investigation director also testified that the agency had believed Sessions was "inevitably going to recuse" for reasons he could not elaborate on.
