Halep into women's singles final at Roland Garros, faces Ostapenko next

In the final Ostapenko will face world No. 4 Simona Halep, who beat Karolina Pliskova in three sets in the second semifinal. But Bartoli took place in a couple of title matches there that came close: In 2007, she was seeded 18th when she lost to Venus Williams, who was 23rd, making the lowest pair of women's finalists in tournament history. Not since Mima Jausovec in 1983 has a player outside the leading ranks made it all the way to the trophy decider.

"I'm really happy and proud".

It looked like the same might happen in the third set when Bacsinszky fought back from 3-1 to 3-3 but Ostapenko had learned her lesson and clinched victory with a forehand into the corner - her 50th victor.

Should she win on Saturday against third seed Simona Halep, she would become only the second unseeded player to win the women's title at the French Open after Britain's Margaret Scriven in 1933. I think that's what made the difference. That's not to say there haven't been others, of course, among men and women. Not only is this just her eighth major tournament, and not only had she never been past so much as the third round at one before this week, and not only did she lose her opening match in Paris a year ago, but she has yet to win a tour-level title of any sort.

- Ostapenko also praised her coach Anabel Medina Garrigues, a former world number 16, who teamed up with the Latvian earlier this season. "I'm just happy with the way I celebrated my birthday", said Ostapenko after the match.

Ostapenko's run at the French Open is her best Grand Slam performance so far and she will rise to as high as the top eight if she makes the final.

The Romanian's 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory sets a final clash with 20-year-old Jelena Ostapenko and leaves Halep one victory from her first Grand Slam final and the WTA's No.1 ranking as well.

"I feel like I have more experience", Halep said afterwards.

"But then I was just trying to be calm and just to try to play my game and just enjoy every moment".

Halep marked herself out as a favourite for the title at Roland Garros after winning in Madrid and finishing runner-up in Rome, but a tumble in the Italian Open final left her with ankle ligament damage and cast doubt over whether she would play in Paris.

"But then, like, first match was a tough match, as well, and I won it".

Ostapenko's forehand, which this fortnight has averaged three miles per hour faster than Andy Murray's, had helped her blast her way past Sam Stosur and Wozniacki in the previous two rounds.

Bacsinszky received treatment on her right knee shortly after dropping serve in the seventh game of the contest. "It is nice to be in the final again, I hope I can play better and win it. That gap won't be there at Wimbledon because (Maria) Sharapova will come back, Victoria (Azarenka) will come back, (Petra) Kvitova will be better than ever", Evert said. They had very similar stats in serve percentage and aces, but Ostapenko hit more winners with 50 against Bacsinszky's 22.
