Theresa May pays the price for reckless election decision

But the Labour MP told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "We haven't won that election". Since winning the Labour leadership in 2015, few commentators gave him much chance of doing well nationally — he was seen by many as too left-wing, too much of a pacifist, and tarnished by prior associations with the radical group Hamas and the IRA.

"I think her position is, in the long term, untenable", another Conservative lawmaker, Anna Soubry, tells Sky News. "It is quite possible she will go". But not for some time, let's get this clear.

British Prime Minister Theresa May is making appointments to her Cabinet as she tries to shore up authority undermined by a poor election result.

The stunning election result comes after a campaign in which May lost popularity over her style and some of her social care policies, including a so-called "dementia tax" that would force the elderly to pay more for their care.

"Theresa May is a dead woman walking".

They were replaced by Gavin Barwell, a former housing minister who lost his seat in the election.

He said: "I am backing Theresa May".

Mr Osborne, who was sacked by Mrs May and now is editor of the London Evening Standard, said there was now no majority in the Commons for a "hard Brexit".

Analysts say May's electoral debacle could reopen what had seemed largely a closed debate - both with pro-EU members of Parliament trying to take advantage of the prime minister's weakness and Euro-skeptic government ministers threatening her if she dares water down a Brexit deal.

But media reports suggest they had demanded the departure of May's joint chiefs of staff, Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill, as the price for allowing the 60-year-old vicar's daughter to stay in office.

But he said his party would seek to vote down May's Queen's Speech, or program for government, when she presented it to parliament, and another national election might be needed to break the deadlock.

It was another humiliation for May, and a sign that the socially conservative DUP, with its strong focus on Northern Ireland's specific political complexities, will not necessarily be a compliant partner for her minority government.

Then, after midnight, Downing Street responded, saying: "The Prime Minister has tonight spoken with the DUP to discuss finalising a confidence and supply deal when Parliament returns next week".

Some senior Tories have made the removal of Hill and Timothy a condition for continuing to support May, who has vowed to remain prime minister despite the Conservatives' losing their overall majority in Parliament.

The DUP is a far-right and homophobic party in Northern Ireland, who vetoed several votes for same-sex marriage.

DUP leader Arlene Foster said she would meet May on Tuesday while Downing Street said the incumbent premier would "finalize" a deal in the coming week.

Sir Michael said: "You'd be pretty surprised if we had an agreement just in a single day". "We want to do what is right for the whole of the United Kingdom".

The Conservative Party won 318 seats, eight short of a majority. The main opposition Labour Party surpassed expectations by winning 262.
