Israel pushes ahead with plans for 3000 new settler units

U.S. President Donald Trump says he can broker the Mideast peace agreement his predecessors failed to secure, using negotiating skills he developed as a NY real estate mogul.

In March, Netanyahu's security cabinet approved the first new settlement in the occupied West Bank in two decades, despite worldwide concern they are an obstacle to peace.

Promotion of the new settlement comes as Israelis and Palestinians marked the 50th anniversary of the Six Day War, when Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Israeli authorities were not available to comment immediately on the Peace Now report.

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu had pledged to build a new settlement for around 40 families from the hard-line Jewish outpost of Amona, which was evacuated under a court order in February.

More than 600,000 Israelis live in settlements in the West Bank, including in annexed east Jerusalem. Tens of thousands of Palestinian homes and properties have been demolished by Israel, and hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have been forcibly displaced.

What I will point out is that on at least three occasions in the past 69 years, a two-state solution was on the table and supported by Israelis.

While the majority of the planned homes are in pre-existing settlements, some will be built in the first new official settlement in some 25 years, Peace Now said.

Last month, Trump visited Israel and the Palestinian territories, meeting both Netanyahu and Abbas as he seeks what he has called the "ultimate deal".

On Tuesday, the premier told settlers he would keep building across the West Bank.

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas's spokesman called Mr Netanyahu's comment a "challenge" to Mr Trump and the worldwide community.

"The global community must put an end to the multi-million-dollar profits that have fuelled mass human rights violations against Palestinians", Amnesty worldwide said in a statement.

Hugh Lovatt, Israel coordinator at the European Council on Foreign Relations think tank, said the new settlements would not totally derail Trump's push.

One Palestinian man was shot dead by Israeli security forces on Friday, amid clashes between the Israeli Defense Forces and demonstrators on the Israeli border with the Gaza Strip, said the health ministry of the Islamist movement Hamas which runs the territory. "Now Abbas has indicated he is no longer holding Israel to even a partial freeze - he will go back into negotiations without preconditions".

She said: "There were people who kind of felt nothing much is going to change but others who were still full of hope, full of creativity and really wanting to challenge the status quo".
