Sooner surprise: Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops retires at 56

Bob Stoops' stunning retirement from coaching on Wednesday marks the end of an era at Oklahoma.

Besides, by leaving at or near the height of his ability, at the relatively young age of 56, Stoops leaves himself room to add to his already impressive legacy - by gifting to his successor, Lincoln Riley, what seems to be one of the best teams in recent program history, as well as a program poised to remain among college football's annual elite. He coached the team to 10 wins or more in 14 of his 18 seasons as head coach, including a National Title in 2000 over the Florida State Seminoles.

Coach Stoops will be succeeded by offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley, who - at 33-years old - will be the youngest head coach in the FBS.

"After 18 years at the University of Oklahoma, I've chose to step down as the head football coach". "I feel like I'm honestly living a dream right now". Oklahoma lost consecutive BCS championship games in 2003 and "04 and dropped another title game in 2008".

Along the way, his teams won first with defense and then with offense, adapting to the changing flow of the Big 12.

In 1999, Bob Stoops became the head coach at the University of Oklahoma.

"There is life after coaching, and once he decided the time was right, he was going to move on", Spurrier said.

Big Game Bob wasn't delivering the biggest wins, but the program was as consistent a national power as any in the country during his tenure.

Oklahoma went 11-2 in Stoops' final season as head coach, including a 9-0 record in conference play and a win over Auburn in the Sugar Bowl. Stoops started out as the defensive backs coach for the Wildcats and ended his time in Manhattan as the co-defensive coordinator. Ron Stoops an assistant coach at Youngstown State. "Coach Stoops, when I was growing up, was always the face of Oklahoma football".

"Bob truly represents what is good about college football and the success of his career speaks for itself", Mark Stoops said. "What he means to me as a brother and a coach is immeasurable". The last time the conference saw an appearance was in 2010, when Texas fell to Alabama; the last victory was a 2006 Rose Bowl victory by the Longhorns against USC.

"Bob did a tremendous job turning things around at Oklahoma and putting their program back in national prominence", Brown said. He is married to Carol Stoops, a Mary Kay National Sales Director, and has three children. A daughter attends Oklahoma and twin sons are seniors in high school who are potential major college football players.
