In Cape Town and surrounding areas, storm victims included four people who died in a fire caused by lightning, three who died in another fire and one who was killed when a home collapsed, disaster management officials said.

By 8am no flights at Cape Town International Airport had ben affected by the storm‚ but while planes were operating normally the same could not be said of trains and automobiles.

The storm hit the Cape Peninsula early on Wednesday morning, which some have described as the "worst storm in living memory".

The storm comes two weeks after the region declared a drought disaster. We are used to getting storms here in the Cape.

A severe storm is set to hit the Western Cape on Wednesday, following months of dry conditions in the area.

"The City urges consumers, where possible, to use suitable containers to capture rainwater, which is ideal for flushing toilets, as an example".

On Tuesday‚ the air force and disaster management teams were put on standby as swells of up to 16 metres were predicted. Commuters should expect delays of up to an hour on all other lines, Metrorail said on Twitter.

James-Brent Styan‚ spokesman for local government‚ environmental affairs and development planning MEC Anton Bredell‚ said the unprecedented move to close schools followed warnings "that this is going to be the worst storm we've had in 30 years".

The City of Cape Town advised residents on Wednesday to not use more water just because it was raining, reminding them that the use of water was still officially for essential use only.

In a statement on Tuesday, Western Cape education department head Brian Schreuder said the decision was taken in the best interests of pupil and teacher safety.
