Hosts England became the first team to qualify for the Champions Trophy semifinals after hammering New Zealand by 87 runs to stay top of Group A at Sophia Gardens on Tuesday.

New Zealand and Bangladesh each have a point due to their washouts against Australia and should Smith's side lose, the victor of their match on Friday in Cardiff will advance to the last four.

After winning the toss, New Zealand put England into bat and they appeared to have made the right decision when Adam Milne bowled opener Jason Roy for 13.

Mark Wood and Jake Ball made the most important breakthroughs against New Zealand, and Liam Plunkett (four for 55) and Adil Rashid cashed in too to defend 310 all out with 87 runs to spare.

Williamson and Taylor shared a 95-run partnership for the third wicket and were on the brink of taking control of the game.

Morgan's side face Australia at Edgbaston on Saturday in their final Group A game.

The remaining spot is still up for grabs, with Australia, New Zealand and Bangladesh all still in with a chance of grabbing second place in the group.

· Both nations have claimed three wins apiece across their last six encounters in ODI cricket; England come into this match having secured successive victories over the Black Caps however.

Liam Plunkett took four for 55 as New Zealand were bundled out for 223.

Root had lifted Mitchell Santner for two such sumptuous sixes over long-off on his way to his 52-ball fifty, while straight-hitting was also a feature of Ben Stokes' batting as he pitched in with a handy 53-ball 48 once captain Eoin Morgan came and went for a forgettable 13, out edging Corey Anderson behind.

It was to be a similar story for Joe Root who joined Hales in a second wicket stand of 81. They could not play the full 50 overs as they were all out in 49.3 overs but by then, they have already scored 310 runs.

Tuesday's success means England will return to the Welsh capital as Group A winners for a last four clash against the as yet unknown Group B runners-up on June 14, in an event featuring the world's leading eight one-day worldwide (ODI) teams.

Plunkett was the main beneficiary, dismissing James Neesham (18), Corey Anderson (10), Milne (10) and Tim Southee (2) to finish with figures of four for 55 - the flawless tonic after the tournament-ending injury to Chris Woakes.

The No.3 accumulated a solid fifty from 66 balls without ever dominating and was undone by a snorter from Mark Wood which bounced off his gloves to the keeper.
