India set to launch heaviest satellite

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully launched a communication satellite GSAT-19 using its heaviest rocket GSLV Mark-III.

The newly developed indigenous launch vehicle is set to insert the communication satellite GSAT-19 into a geosynchronous transfer orbit after it blasts off from the second launch pad of the spaceport at 5.28 pm today.

The GSLV Mk III rocket will carry a satellite weighing more than three tonnes into a high orbit above Earth, a landmark achievement as India had struggled to match the heavier payloads of other space giants.

The satellite GSAT-19, GSLV-Mk III delivers into orbit, weighs over 3 tons - a record for the Indian space industry.

Space agency director AS Kiran Kumar said it is the heaviest rocket and satellite to be launched from India. "Congratulations to the dedicated scientists of ISRO for the successful launch of GSLV-MKIII D1/GSAT-19 mission", he tweeted.

PM Modi congratulates ISRO on the successful launch. The success of this rocket and its consequent tests will make India part of an exclusive space club that consists of India, China and Russian Federation (including the USSR period) - the only nations to have used their own rockets and facilities to send astronauts into space.

According to ISRO, GSAT-19, with a lifespan of 10 years, is a multi-beam satellite that carries Ka and Ku band forward and return link transponders and geostationary radiation spectrometer.

India's communication resources will also increase after this mission because a single GSAT-19 satellite will be equal to having a series of six to seven satellites of the older variety in space.

ISRO was not only the first to discover water on the Southern hemisphere of the moon but also the first to launch a communication satellite for the benefit of the SAARC nation earlier last month. Similar tests were conducted in 1979, 1993, and 2001, but all of these had failed to launch successfully.

The amount of time and energy that was invested that CUSP (Cryogenic Upper Stage Project) and MkII demanded, "We could have completed the same [MkIII] activity five years back", said Dr. Sivan, who named the elusive MkII the "naughty boy" of the Indian space. "The process of fuel filling for the cryogenic engine has begun", S. Somanath, Director, Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre, told IANS on Monday.

This will bring ISRO one step closer to unravel more space missions in the near future.

The rocket's main and bigger cryogenic engine has been developed by space scientists here.
