USA spelling bee kicks off with new tie-breaker rules

Despite some tweaks created to ensure just one victor emerges at the end of the iconic annual spelling bee, things haven't worked out that way.

Three spellers, including Tejas Muthusamy from Henrico, are participating in their fourth Scripps Bee. The company's president, Linda Tarrant, said she's recently hired younger coaches who placed high in the bee, such as Gokul Venkatachalam, the other co-champion from 2015, and Snehaa Ganesh Kumar, the 2016 runner-up. The bee is limited to students in eighth grade or below, with contestants ranging in age from 6 to 15 years old.
