Del Potro makes winning return at French Open

There may have been no great expectations of Johanna Konta at Roland Garros, but her first-round defeat by Su-Wei Hsieh, the world No 109, this afternoon will go down as one of the more considerable disappointments of her career in some time.

Konta, 26, has still yet to win a match in the main draw at Roland Garros after three successive first-round losses.

Konta raced through the first set but then got bogged down in a battle and became thoroughly frustrated as Hsieh ground out a 1-6, 7-6 (7/2), 6-4 victory.

She said: "I know results-wise it doesn't reflect it necessarily, but the conversations I have with my coach and the way I feel, I've actually made a lot of improvements on this surface with every match that I played".

"But then there were times where I felt that she did play incredibly well".

Britain's world No.8 Johanna Konta insists she is happy with the progress she has made through the clay season despite crashing out of the French Open in the first round.

"It's not really easy to play the seed in the first round: They play all the big tournaments, they are very positive, their mental is very tough, their body is big and strong", Hsieh said.

Konta's elimination was the major women's upset on Tuesday at Roland Garros. Connection with her backhand was now very few and far between as three consecutive breaks left Hsieh in the driving seat.

Instead, a stunning drop volley set up the first match point - only for a loose back hand from Hsieh to hand Konta a lifeline.

The 33-year-old clay-court specialist outmuscled the German ninth seed when play resumed yesterday, with Zverev having lost his momentum from a day earlier when he had grabbed the second set and looked in complete control.

His best result at the French Open was reaching the semifinals in 2009, just months before he won his Grand Slam title in NY.

But Hsieh fought back and Konta had to save five break points before her opponent eventually prevailed in the second-set tiebreaker.

She could not find the answers to turn the match back in her favour and, after saving four break points, Hsieh sealed the biggest win of her career.
