Dixon invovled in scary crash

Scott Dixon has walked away from a massive accident that left his auto torn in half on lap 53 of the Indianapolis 500.

McLaren Formula One driver Fernando Alonso led for a total of 27 laps on his Indy debut, before retiring with an engine failure with 21 laps remaining.

Jay Howard hit the wall coming out of Turn 2 and rolled through the middle of the straightaway with a broken auto, with his right front suspension askew.

Dixon's vehicle was shredded by the retaining wall, but the tub of the auto remained intact and the 2008 champion was able to climb out on his own to a roar from the crowd.

The red flag was waived bringing a temporary stop the race because of a hole made in the safety fencing.

Amazingly, Dixon was able to walk away from the crash.

"Yeah just a little beaten up there".

"Just a little beaten up", said Dixon, the 2008 Indy 500 victor in a trackside interview. I'm just bummed for them and glad everyone is OK.

But the New Zealander insists he was ok and was thankful for the help he received. Howard did too. We're yet to hear from Dixon, but Howard feels very bad about what happened and that his incident took out another vehicle. But he did blast fellow driver Ryan Hunter-Reay. And as is typical for a racing driver, he's already looking forward to next year's running of the 500.

Howard, a 37-year-old Englishman, is driving an extra vehicle for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports in a Honda sponsored by Team One Cure, funded by the Tony Stewart Foundation. With nowhere to go, Dixon plowed into Howard.

"Overall I just think we were a little bit light on downforce but later in the race that would have been the right move to have".

"I lifted, trying to be a nice guy. To say that I'm upset would be an understatement".

Dixon's vehicle went airborne and flipped over before landing on the retaining barrier, where the impact punched a hole in the safety fencing.

"It's tough", Dixon said. "You make those decisions, which way to go".

Dixon spoke with a Verizon pit reporter Katie Osborne after the incident, and casually referred to his insane ordeal as a "wild ride" where he simply felt as though he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. "You just hold on and have faith in the safety advances that we've had over the years". The tub of his vehicle collapsed and Bourdais was left with a fractured pelvis, hip and ribs.

Commentators described Dixon's crash as "bizarre" and said he was "incredibly lucky" to survive the collision on turn two during lap 54.
